London Taxis

Complete your London experience with a ride in a black cab! London's classic black cabs also come decorated in a dazzling palette of colours these days. Black cabs can be hailed in the street or at designated ranks situated in prominent places, including many mainline rail, Tube and bus stations. They can also be booked by telephone. If the yellow TAXI sign at the front is illuminated, the cab is available for hire. Black cabs are legally obliged to take on any job for journeys up to 12 miles (20 miles for cabs at the Heathrow Airport taxi ranks), or up to one hour duration. Fares are metered, and there is a minimum charge of £2.20. Black cabs are licensed to carry up to five people (six in the special Metrocabs and Mercedes Vitos) plus luggage. There are no additional charges for extra passengers or items of luggage within these limits.

London Buses

London buses are a quick, convenient and cheap way to travel around. And you'll get plenty of sightseeing opportunities en route. London buses have seen many improvements in recent years with new buses, more frequent services and improved accessibility. The Central London bus guide will be sufficient for most travellers. This map is available from travel information centres at larger Tube stations or to download from Travel Maps. London is a 24-hour city so buses run throughout the night. Night bus services cover the period between the close of the Tube and the start of daytime bus services. In addition, many London bus routes run for 24 hours.

London Underground

London's Underground rail network, or 'the Tube' as it is universally known to Londoners, is normally the quickest and easiest way of travelling around London. Transport for London produces free maps and guides to help you get around. You can pick up a London Underground Map upon arrival at any London Tube station. London Travel Information centres sell tickets and provide free maps. There are centres at all Heathrow Airport terminals, major stations in London and the Britain and London Visitor Centre. Greater London is served by 12 Tube lines, along with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and an interconnected local train network. Trains generally run between 5am and midnight, Monday to Saturday. Operating hours are reduced on Sunday. Exact details depend on the station and the line, so it's worth checking the Transport for London website.

  • Zones and Tube Fares
London's transport map is divided into six concentric zones with Zones 1 and 2 in Central London and Zone 6 covering the outer edge of the capital. You should consider an Oyster card and/or a Travelcard to get the best fares and beat the queues. If you're caught on the Tube without a valid ticket you're liable for an on-the-spot fine.

London Bicycle Rentals

London's new Barclays Cycle Hire scheme is a public bike sharing scheme for shorter journeys around the capital. Sign up, grab a bike and go - the first 30 minutes is free to Barclays Cycle Hire scheme members. When you've finished your journey, drop the bike back to one of 400 locations in Central London. Barclays Cycle Hire is a public bicycle sharing scheme similar to the Velib bikes in Paris. From August to September 2010 bike docking stations are opening across the capital until there are 6,000 bikes at 400 locations in London's Zone One travel area. You're encouraged to use the bikes for short journeys as a new form of public transport. Cycle Hire docking stations are located across nine London boroughs and in several Royal Parks in Central London. If you want to hire a bike for a day or longer, rent it from one of London's many bicycle hire companies.

London Riverboat Services

Thames riverboat services are popular with visitors to London, and they're used by local commuters as well. Travelling by river is a great way to get to your destination. You'll beat the traffic and soak up some fantastic views of London along the way! The Riverboat Services listed here are the more basic commuter services, generally without commentary.

Thames Clippers
Serving both as scheduled commuter and tourist boats, Thames Clippers services are great value and fast. They run from Embankment and the London Eye to Woolwich, via Canary Wharf, stopping at Tate Modern, London Bridge, Tower of London, Hilton London Docklands Riverside, The O2and Greenwich
