NFC South DivisionCreated in 2002, the NFC South is one of the leagues most competitive division which also includes the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Entering the 7th season of the NFC South, there has never been a repeat division champion. From 2002 to 2006, a team from this division had appeared in every NFC Championship game including the Buccaneers going on to win Super Bowl XXXVII in 2002 and the Panthers the next year where they lost Super Bowl XXXVIII to the Patriots. Also, this division is so tough that from 2003 to 2007, the team that finished in last place in the division ended up winning the division the very next year. Carolina finished last in 2002, and then first in 2003. The Atlanta Falcons finished last in 2003, and won it in 2004. The Buccaneers would do the same in 2004, and first in 2005. New Orleans finished last in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, and won the division in their return to New Orleans in 2006. This past year Tampa Bay accomplished this feat again as they won the division after finishing last in it in 2006. All signs point to the Atlanta Falcons making a huge comeback in 08 under new coach Mike Smith.Atlanta Falcons HistoryOn June 30, 1965 former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle granted ownership of a new NFL franchise to Rankin Smith Jr which would makes its home in one of Americas most popular cities. The Atlanta Falcons played their first 35 years in MLBs Atlanta Braves home - Fulton County Stadium where they won one division championship in 1980. In 1992 the Falcons moved down the street to their brand new indoor stadium called the Georgia Dome. Here is where they began to get popular as they would go on to win their division in 1998 and 2004. Jeff Chandler, Jamal Anderson , and the rest of the 1998 Dirty Birds won the NFC Championship over the heavily favored 15-1 Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota earning them their first ever Super Bowl appearance. They lost Super Bowl XXXIII to the Denver Broncos in John Elways final game. In February 2002 the family of long time owner Taylor and Rankin Smith sold the Atlanta Falcons to Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank. Blank has become one of the more known owners in the NFL as he has greatly improved the fan experience at the Georgia Dome, spent more money on quality players, and clearly doing all he can to give Atlanta a winning franchise. The Atlanta Falcons will begin their 43rd season as an NFL Franchise with a much different look then what people had become accustomed to as they try to climb back up the ladder behind a fresh, young group of players like DeAngelo Hall, Jamaal Anderson, and new head coach Mike Smith coming over from a winning Jacksonville Jaguars franchise.Georgia DomeSince 1992 the Atlanta Falcons have called the world-class Georgia Dome home. Located in downtown Atlanta the Georgia Dome is considered the largest cable-supported domed stadium in the world and has a capacity of 71,250 energized Falcons fans. It has hosted famous worldwide events such as the gymnastics and basketball events of the 1996 Summer Olympics, Super Bowl XXVIII and XXXIV, 2002 and 2007 NCAA Mens Final Four, the annual NCAA Peach Bowl, and many concerts by well known artists. By the time the 2008 season kicks off, the Georgia dome will have completed both phases of dramatic improvements to as Arthur Blank puts it, Provide fans a driveway-to-driveway experience. Renovations include new, bigger Hi-Def replay screens, completely remodeled Verizon Club Lounge areas, renovated lower level and upper level concourses with improved concession stands.
